Long-term commitment | Generations of Stewardship
Our comprehensive Statement of Corporate Intent reflects our dedication to maintaining world-class forest management standards under international FSC® certification, ensuring that future generations inherit forests that are economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially beneficial.
City Forests' primary mission is to maintain and enhance the comprehensive values of our Forest Estate investment, encompassing economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social contribution for the benefit of Dunedin and New Zealand.
We maintain FSC® certification as leaders in sustainable forest management, contribute meaningfully to New Zealand's zero carbon objectives, protect and enhance biodiversity through evidence-based conservation, and manage 2,400+ hectares of native forest reserves and high-value wetlands.
We optimise long-term returns for our shareholder, Dunedin City Council, support local economic growth through employment and value-added processing, maintain sustainable harvest levels ensuring perpetual forest productivity, and explore opportunities across the forestry value chain.
We ensure safety, health, and wellbeing of all staff, contractors, and forest visitors. We provide recreational and educational opportunities for our community, build genuine partnerships with Mana Whenua honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and support community organisations and social initiatives.
Our forests are strategically located throughout Coastal Otago, with products sold to local and international markets.
We focus on sustainable forest ownership and management with 20,000+ hectares of certified production forest, value-added processing support by partnering with Otago and Southland wood processors, carbon solutions through active participation in New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme, biodiversity conservation through research and protection of endangered species, and community engagement by providing recreation access, education, and partnership development.
