The property protects Pa a Te Moua, a significant Māori pā site within Takitoa forest. Ongoing consultation with local rūnanga ensures cultural values are appropriately recognised and protected, supported by professional archaeological surveys and established protection protocols.
The property preserves several significant historic sites, including the underground coal mine remnants at Taratu Mines (1884–1947) and gold rush-era mining remnants and water race systems at Waipori. The Silverstream water race provides accessible historic water infrastructure, while gold mining tunnels along the Yellow Ridge Track are also protected, maintaining important links to the region's mining heritage.
